Improving economy cutting into discount chains

Looks like a price war is brewing between the major discount chain stories like Walmart and Target, with Walmart planning to cut prices even more to try and win back customers.

The problem? The economy is improving, so bargain-hunting shoppers aren't hunting for as many bargains.

The sharp cuts at its U.S. Walmart stores, which came ahead of Memorial Day weekend, have already pushed rivals such as Target into price wars. And the markdowns are expected to keep coming throughout the summer.

They're one of the boldest moves the world's largest retailer is making to turn around sluggish business at its U.S. namesake chain and win back shoppers from rivals. The cuts aren't across the store but target 22 foods and other essentials at an average savings of 30 percent — splashy enough to get attention and perhaps change perceptions.

The world's largest retailer is also restoring items like certain soups and laundry detergent it stopped carrying when it tried to declutter its stores. It's also pushing more basic clothing such as socks and underwear after putting too much focus on trendy items that didn't sell.

Debunking senseless census lies

Sigh. The obsessive paranoid conspiracy theories of the teabaggers targeting Obama knows no end.

In case you see it on Facebook or spewed into your inbox, here are the answers:

No, census workers cannot enter your home or apartment without your permission.

Also, the rumor that the Census Department is hiring, firing, then rehiring workers in order to inflate job numbers is also not true. Even IF they were doing that, it would make no difference in the monthly jobs reports.

They just make this shit up and pull it out of their own asses.

Teabagger: Abolish Social Security

Looks like it's the teabaggers that really want old people to die.

Sharron Angle wants to wipe out Social Security, shutter the Education Department and return to the days almost a century ago when the federal income tax was unconstitutional.

"I am the tea party," said Angle, a 60-year-old former Nevada lawmaker.

Ground Zero mosque approved

In the teabagger forum on Delphi, one forum regular said that if the proposed mosque at Ground Zero were to be built, she'd bomb it.

The authorities will need to keep an eye on her, because the Ground Zero mosque was approved... overwhelmingly.

After hours of contentious public comment, a New York City community board voted late Tuesday to support a plan to build a mosque and cultural center near ground zero.

The vote was 29-to-1 in favor of the plan, with 10 abstentions. The move by the Manhattan Community Board 1, while not necessary for the building's owners to move forward with the project, is seen as key to obtaining residents' support.

The organizations sponsoring the project say they're trying to meet a growing need for prayer space in lower Manhattan, as well as provide a venue for the dissemination of mainstream Islam, to counter extremism.

"The moderate Muslim voice has been squashed in America," said Bruce Wallace, who said he lost a nephew in the Sept. 11 attacks. "Here is a chance to allow moderate Muslims to teach people that not all Muslims are terrorists."

Obama to be impeached?

In the teabagger and white militia discussion forums, they're all atwitter that Obama is "soon to be impeached."

As usual, they've gone off half-cocked again.

Fox News' Dick Morris' baselessly claimed that an alleged job offer by the Obama administration to Rep. Joe Sestak would constitute an "impeachable offense." However, the Reagan administration reportedly made a similar offer to a candidate, and legal experts have rejected the claims that such offers are illegal.

Right wing threats against lawmakers

And they keep insisting they don't threaten anyone, that it MUST be some kind of liberal conspiracy. But the investigations show that threats against lawmakers are way up, and it's coming from the right -- and no surprise, Rush Limbaugh's and Sean Hannity's names come up.

In February 2009, a man left voice mail messages for Stabenow in several of her Michigan offices.

“We’re gonna [expletive] get you,” he said in one message. “We’re gonna get you with a lot of [expletive] bolt action. Like we did RFK; like we did MLK. We know who you are. We’ll get you.”

FBI agents tracked the calls to a 54-year-old Texas man who lived alone — and who at one time had owned a 20-gun arsenal of handguns, shotguns and rifles. According to the documents, he told officers that he was “really, really drunk” when he made the calls. He said he was just “venting” — taking out his frustrations after hearing a discussion of the Fairness Doctrine and becoming concerned that the government would attempt to abolish the radio shows of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.

In testimony submitted to Congress, Capitol Police officials have said that the threats against lawmakers have caused them to dramatically increase their security efforts. Police who work on protective details say demands on their time have skyrocketed, and the department has requested a 54 percent increase — of $2.7 million — to fund travel for its dignitary protection officers in fiscal year 2011.

Ban the word "democracy!"

It seems to me teabaggers on the Texas Board of Education don't like the word "democracy" because it would make school kids think of Democrats as, like, human or something.

Amazing. Teabaggers are actively opposed to democracy.

Americans are dumping religion

Americans have become increasingly less tied to formal religion in recent decades, with the percentage saying they do not have a specific religious identity growing from near zero in the 1950s to 16% this year and last.

Teabaggers burn Obama in effigy

A bunch of drunk, asshole teabaggers burned a bust of Obama in effigy. The bust reportedly had duct tape around its neck to simulate a lynching.

Remember when just criticizing Bush was "giving aid and comfort to the terrorists"?

The truth about Glenn Beck's ratings

There's been some pushback against the story about Glenn Beck's ratings, which are in free fall. Beck apparently went on the air and said his ratings were up, not down.

Well, here's the truth. Glenn Beck is lying through his teeth.

Bill Maher let Real Time guest lie

Why did Bill Maher let one of his Real Time guests tell a whopper Friday night without correcting her?

S.E. Cupp, when asked for proof of her paranoid theory that practically everyone in the country is "attacking Christianity," said that President Obama "canceled the National Day of Prayer."

No, he didn't.

A federal judge ruled that the National Day of Prayer was unconstitutional, but far from canceling it, Obama issued the proclamation anyway.

I'm surprised Bill let his guest get away with telling such a huge, easily-disproven lie.

Pat Buchanan: Too many Jews!

Pat Buchanan is bitching about too many Jews on the Supreme Court. This is for real.

But don't be too hard on Pat. One of his ancestors died in Auschwitz. He fell out of the guard tower.

More jobs this year than Bush's entire presidency

More Jobs Might Be Created This Year Than During George W. Bush's Entire Presidency… but that won't stop the teabaggers from screaming. We already know that for all their talk about jobs, taxes and big government, they're hypocrites. The teabaggers are totally about irrational hatred of Barack Obama, nothing more.

If the economy produces jobs over the next eight months at the same pace as it did over the past four months, the nation will have created more jobs in 2010 alone than it did over the entire eight years of George W. Bush's presidency.

That comparison comes with many footnotes and asterisks. But it shows how the economic debate between the parties could look very different over time -- perhaps by November, more likely by 2012. More important, the comparison underscores the urgency of repairing an American job-creation machine that was sputtering long before the 2008 financial meltdown.

It's 10 times worse than we thought

No matter how bad you thought the oil spill was, it's worse.

President Obama is giving a press briefing tomorrow on the spill, and inside reports are that he is royally pissed. Oops, shouldn't have said "royally," the teabaggers will accuse him of being uppity arrogant.

Teabaggers want to kill you

Teabaggers want to kill you. Maybe one guy might be joking, but when they all talk like this, including their messiahs on TV like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin, it's quiet apparent that what's in their minds, at least what they're fantasizing about and hoping will come to pass, is for progressives and Democrats to be killed.

This is how they think: "Freedom" to them means only those who agree with them should be elected. Anyone who votes another way should be killed.

Congressional District 11 GOP candidate Brad Goehring is drawing fire for his confrontational Facebook statement today: [ed. note: page deleted]

“If I could issue hunting permits, I would officially declare today opening day for liberals. The season would extend through November 2 and have no limits on how many taken as we desperately need to “thin” the herd.” [..]

Something is out of balance

He gets five years on a marijuana charge... but only three years for threatening to kill President Obama and his wife...

A 47-year-old New Orleans man has been sentenced for making death threats against President Obama.

U.S. District Judge Jay Zainey on Tuesday sentenced John Turnpaugh to three years in prison for that charge and another five years for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute it and possession of four firearms to aid his drug trafficking.According to cour

t records, Turnpaugh admitted calling a New Orleans Police Department 911 operator on Dec. 30 and saying he was going to kill the President and his wife. A subsequent investigation by the police and U.S. Secret Service determined that the caller was Turnpaugh. He ple

aded guilty to the charges Feb. 2.

Teabaggers claim their first political victim

The teabaggers, heretofore a political force of no force at all, have claimed their first victim: One of the most conservative members of Congress, Bob Bennett.

Here's hoping they do the same in every GOP primary this season.

Inconsistency

The teabaggers bitch and moan how Obama is somehow "taking away their freedoms" but they're quite alright with Joe Lieberman's idea of stripping a person's citizenship from him without due process, just on suspicion alone.

The teabaggers gripe about loss of freedom because the FDA wants to regulate salt content in food, but they have no problem with arresting people merely because they "look like an illegal."

Wanting to regulate the health insurance corporations or regulate big banks to keep another financial meltdown from happening is EVIL, but guilty until proven innocent (if your skin is brown) is GOOD.

Teabaggers want to PARTY on 9-11

No matter which side of the political fence you're on, this is completely inappropriate.

The Terrorist Loophole

There is a huge loophole in federal law that allows people on terror watch lists to buy guns and explosives... and it's due to Republicans and the gun lobby. And now New York's Mayor Bloomberg is going to Washington to demand something be done about it.

With his city still on edge over this weekend's attempted truck-bombing in Times Square, New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg heads to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to give Congress a piece of his mind on a closely related issue.

Bloomberg is upset about a federal loophole that, amazingly enough, allows people on the FBI's Terrorist Watchlist to legally buy guns and explosives.

Current federal law specifies only a limited number of reasons the government can cite to block the purchase of guns or explosives -- and being in the FBI's database of those "known or reasonably suspected of being involved in terrorist activity" isn't one of them.

Despite what would appear to be an easy vote, members of Congress, at least in part due to fear of the gun lobby, have consistently bucked requests from both the Bush and Obama administrations to close what Bloomberg calls the "terror gap."
